2010
François Taton is mijn muzikale alter ego.
Maps serve as proxy terrain you can own, you can fold.
Maps can be bought, can be sold, collected, altered and faked.
They substitute what is real, what is dirt in your hands.
Enabling decisions, enabling overview, enabling placement, enabling ownership.
Born from data so high, they are not free, they are, inaccessible.
Kings, queens, noblemen fought for the power of knowing their own locations.
They murdered, they nabbed, they burned, they stabbed.
Blood spilt for unique knowledge.
That’s why craftsmen put pen to paper.
Nowadays data is merely gathered.
Distributed in ways devout of dedication.
Serving knowledge without added mirth and soul breeds indifference.
Another map, another simplification of reality, erasing places of possibility.
We no longer inhabit an Earth, respectable in both wonder and girth.
Everything, everywhere, everyone known to your laptop, desktop, cellphone.
Frustration takes hold when looking at maps of places, people, graphs and faces.
Soon wondrous flesh is nothing but data, merely gathered sans love.
Legend, grid, color, icon, relief, line, fold, rose.
Places, heights, distances, markings, names, sizes, types, bodies.
